Re: App Store now allows Older App Versions Download - Kill ATM?
« Reply #32 on: September 22, 2013, 02:44:19 PM »
I'm sure someone will hack it and port it in due time. If that is the case, 1 of 3 things will happen to ATM

The numbers of apps in ATM will skyrocket
ATM will be removed because it is no longer needed
ATM will link to the older iOS 3 compatible apps on the App Store.

In any case this is a game changer. One thing that worries me though is that Apple doesn't normally do something without a reason. IDK, maybe I'm over thinking it.

It will be interesting to find out for sure, but they probably do have archives of the iOS 3 compatible apps.

"...ATM will be removed because it is no longer needed

- I totally disagree with this. Apple/iTunes proved again & again that they don't care about owners of their older devices so iTunes cannot be trusted as keepers of older compatible apps. App Time Machine (ATM) now offers more than 1,000 apps & keeps on growing as apps are tested and added to their database & it would be totally stupid to remove that awesome feature from Whited00r IMO.

"...Apple doesn't normally do something without a reason" - The main reason they back tracked on preventing millions of old iOS users from downloading older compatible app versions is the complaints of those users as Apple's priority has always been to push sales of newer devices.

With iOS 7 kicking out additional millions of iPhone 3GS, iPod Touch 3 & 4G & iPad 1G, Apple needed to take action as the number of frustrated iTunes users would have grown by a huge number with their policy of replacing apps with ones requiring newer iOS that older devices cannot run.

That's good except for the whole buying broken apps that can't be updated as well as allowing users to leave reviews for way outdated versions that can't be updated ;)

Agree but this isn't a problem when it goes to the games, because majority of them were released as a separate apps for each major update. Plus games have a huuuge market share and again it's all about sales.

What?  Not all apps that are in the appstore can be downloaded, because many of them never supported 4.x.  The ones that did can be downloaded as far as we know.

Why not list the apps you tested to help other users saving time?

And please specify your device model and which iOS is currently running on it.

You don't need to delete a firmware (iOS). You just install a new one and it overwrites the previous one.

If you install iOS 4.2.1 over whited00r which is based on an optimized iOS 3.1.3 + custom features then you will loose App Time Machine that has for sure more than 1,000 free compatible & tested apps for a "maybe" in App Store as some apps are not available as users mentioned above.

Besides the slowness of 4.2.1 and loss of Whited00r features.

I don't know why Apple/iTunes does not enable downloading old apps for iOS 3.1.3 in App Store as by doing that they are excluding iPod Touch 1G and iPhone 2G which cannot run any iOS above 3.1.3 because of their hardware limitations. :(
