Have you been using Skype on wifi or data? Have you tried using Skype on multiple networks?
Has Skype been updated recently?
I get on every now and then to check up
Go ahead and download Whited00r 8 BETA if you haven't yet: http://goo.gl/AFZIUT <------

It would seem they have shut down the API that the older versions of the applications used, which is not mean of them really, especially if those API had security holes or were causing performance issues for everyone else (just giving a couple reasons, I don't know the technical reasons why though).

At this point, unless restoring the data from a backup of the app logs you in, I would say the app is now effectively dead. Nothing more can be done to fix it, seeing as you can't run higher firmwares on the device than what apple allows (and it seems it is broken on 4.2.1 as SimulaYOOO said above), and you cannot get apps that require a higher firmware to work on older firmwares.  Also can't change how the app works either, because it is closed source and even jailbreak things and tweaks don't open source the closed source stuff. Everything tweak wise is built from scratch and hours of reverse engineering what methods and classes do, but not the internal code for what they do.

Skype retired ios 4.2.1 and below for apps, those #%^*%#}s  >:( ::)

Honestly the best alternative is viber because a lot of people are using it.

Cracking an app won't fix the issue. Nothing can fix the issue. Apps are closed source, and cannot be modified as if we were the original makers of the application. (even if it didn't rely on server side changes).  We can hook things, and replace methods with our own code, but we don't actually know what they do in the first place so it really is no help in making anything work with newer server API. (which we don't know at all!)

Welcome to the forums :)

You cannot update an application past what the last compatible version of the application was, ever. Sorry :(

As with many of you I just thought that last year, when Skype stopped working on my 3g,  Microsoft was telling the truth saying that they had "deprecated the old Skype protocol".

Well, turns out that they were lying! All you need to do is to change the CFBundleVersion and CFBundleShortVersionString in the Info.plist file to a newer version and the application will login. Still haven't done very extensive testing, but everything seems to work properly.

For example, I changed mine from 3.0.1 to 6.3.211, not I can use the software from my old iPhone.
You'll find the Info.plist file inside the application once it's installed, you might need to reboot for this to work (but maybe not).

almost everyone on the forum has tried to edit info.plist for the new apps to work on older ios...
believe m bro.... every single of us have failed...  the app may install but it will crash as soon as it is launched... once the API of an app has changed there's no way u can run the app...without updating....
so as the newer version of app isnt compatible with older ios ..
all u can do is say good bye to that app just like whatsapp..viber...nd many other apps...

i love my ipod 1g
