How to make a cool reflective text effect

Level: Easy

What you need: Photoshop or GIMP (I made this tutorial with photoshop so it might change a bit with gimp.

Chapter One: Good look

1.Create a new layer, for the tutorial, I'll use width of 500 and a height of 500 aswell, set the color mode to "RGB Color" and the background contents to "transparent" (it doesn't really matter for the background contents because we're going to paint are background anyway)

2.Use the paint bucket tool to paint the background in w/e color you wan't to use as background, I'll use blue for the tutorial. You can also use an already made background.

3.Add some text, choose your font or color and your text size, for the tutorial I'll use a green color and the font called "Bauhaus 93", and my text is 60 pixels big.

4.Duplicate the text layer.

5.Now go to on your tool bar and click on Image->Rotate->Flip Layer Vertical

6.Adjust the text, get it a bit up if needed. It should look something like this.

7.Now, go to you layer box and right click your text layer copy(the one rotated)->simplify the layer.

8.Now stay in the layer box and next to the "lock:" you should see a tool called "lock transparent pixels". Click on that. You should now see a little lock next to your layer.

9.Go to the bar on your left and use he gradient tool.

10.Now go to your gradient settings and set it to "the color of your text" to "white". For the tutorial, I'l use from green to white.

11.Now select your layer copy and use the gradient tool from down to up. It should look like something like this.

12.Now go back to your Layer box and select the opacity of the layer to what you want. Play a bit with it until when you got the feeling it's okay. It usually looks okay between the 30% and 40%.

13.Great, your text should look cooler right here. It should look something like this.

Chapter Two: Better look

1.This chapter is optional, only use it if your not really satisfied with the first chapter. Okay, so first of all duplicate the the "First text layer" and simplify the copy.

2.Go to the box on your left and use the "rectangular marquee tool".

3.Now do as I do.

4.Now press delete. And deselect the layer visibility of the original layer.

5.Now deselect the selection and go to filter->blur->gaussian blur and set the radius to 2 pixels.

6.Now make the original layer visibility back and create a new layer under your text layer, and use the marquee tool again.

7.Draw a big rectangle(longer than your text) and paint it in black.

8.Now resize it and make it really thin.

9.Now put it right underneath you text.

10.Now open the eraser tool and erase the line like me. Zoom in, if you feel like you want to be more precise.

11.Add some little changes if you feel like it.

12.Congratulations, you now made a pro looking text reflection. Here should be the result.

And feel free to add you personal effects in the editing of it, this is a tutorial but you can vary with it. :)

you could just use color to foreground as gradient , so you can use it on every background ;D
