How-To Launch Apps with Siri (iPhone 4S)
« on: January 06, 2012, 01:38:20 AM »
If you haven't seen already, there was a article published by many different tech review, iOS blogs, and other such media websites. Its how to launch iOS apps using Siri. Note, that it is not fully voice controlled yet. So all you CAN do, is bring up the contact information, and manually click on the app you want to launch.

There is a developer trick, that is used to launch apps directly from Safari. The trick would go as such:

"fb://" typed into Safari would launch the Facebook app. Things like "fb://notifications" would launch the Facebook app, but bring up the notifications box.

You can do this with many native apps, such as SMS (Messages) or Maps. Just by typing:

"sms://" or "maps://"

Obviously you have to have the exact right short URL to launch the apps. So until people get the strings from the app files, then you can't just launch everything. So something like "phone://" won't work. It has to be an exact string. But to call a specific number with the phone, you could type something like this:

"tel://18005555555" to dial the number 1-800-555-5555

But in order to bring up the contact information with Siri... you first need to do these things:

1. Make a Contact (Name it whatever you want. I have chosen to name mine "App Shortcuts")

2. In the website/URL column, type in something like "youtube://" (To launch the YouTube app) (You can also make a custom label like I have labeling that specific short URL to YouTube.)

3. Ask Siri to pull up your contact information you just made (Mine would be "App Shortcuts")

4. Note: this is where the hands free option disappears. You now have to manually click on the URL shortcut you want, unfortunately you cannot ask Siri to choose one of the URLs. Which is the same, that you cannot bring up someone's contact information and say "Siri, Whited00r" (Given that www.whited00r.com is the URL, and Whited00r is the custom label). So, in short, you'll just have to manually click on the links.

Here is an image to show you what I mean.

No idea. But it works without Siri. This is just an alternative to launch things with Siri. (Still not fully voice controlled)

This will work on any iDevice. (at least on iOS 3.x+)

I tested the shortcuts on my iPhone 2G (iOS 3.1.3) and it works like a charm.

Yeah. Well the problem, is the servers.

Oh, question: What iOS version are you running? I know your probably running iOS 5.0.1... but are you running build 94A05? or 94A06?

I'm running 94A05, but I don't really see the difference between the two :S

There were only 2 MINOR bug fixes in 94A06. But unfortunately, that is the only build that Tiny Umbrella is saving the SHSH blobs to. I was too late... so either I have to update, or stay make sure I stay at 5.0.1 94A05 until the jailbreak for 5.1 comes out. (5.1 BETA 3 was given to developers earlier. Its a 76MB update, so its probably gonna patch anything that comes out for 5.0.1)

Pod2G told A5 device owners to update and stay on 5.0.1 as they (yeah, they made a "dream team" with musclenerd, PlanetBeing, and the leader of the Chronic Dev team) are currently trying to jailbreak that firmware.

Yeah, sound promising.. but.. lol

I do think if there is a such a group who can jailbreak it, its them. I'm confident that eventually there will be a jailbreak... there always is. But, it could take a while.
