I have the same problem, and i tried to copy net.whatsapp.whatsapp of my working 3gs to my iphone 2g.
It says verification of device failed...

WhatsApp FAQ - Can I verify one WhatsApp account to multiple phones, or with multiple phone numbers?

Quote
WhatsApp can only be verified with one number, on one device.

On a second thought..was also thinking about apps other then whats app carrying out similar functions with a call feature available as well...  Thinking about the technical aspect about it, for now whatsapp aint that secure application since the data is not encrypted at all...

Well obviously with all the people following these WhatsApp threads and posting in them if someone has the solution to fix the WhatsApp server-side checks then they WILL post the solution so it's useless to ask that again and again IMO.

In case it may help, after trying a lot of useless things, I downgraded to FW 3.1.2, install WhatsApp 2.8.4 and before launching it, I restored a previous backup directly from ITunes. After rebooting the phone, I launched Whatsapp and surprisingly it worked, the question is how long until i get kicked off again from the auth servers....
What i don't understand is what everybody says about the .plist file containing the 3 digit passcode. Now that is working I checked that file, but i didn't see any password tag with the code...
Hope it helps.

3G redd00r - whatsapp (too old) - deleted whatsapp

3GS stock ios5 - put my Card in - activated whatsapp on the new phone

put the Card back into the 3G

reinstalled latest whatsapp (from my iTunes library)

copied the plist from 3GS to 3G

whatsapp seems to work - but wont connect !!!

i am inside the "normal" menu - but cant press the "send" button (it is Grey)

the top bar of whatsapp keeps Sayin "connecting" but restarts every 5-7 sec.

whatsapp Settings "not connected"

any ideas ?!

What i don't understand is what everybody says about the .plist file containing the 3 digit passcode. Now that is working I checked that file, but i didn't see any password tag with the code...

...same here - no Password inside the plist (itools) !

Would this work? We restore our iPhone 3G to ios4.1(or something). And just cross our fingers for ios 4.2.1...

Apparently no because the only WhatsApp app available on iTunes @ the present requires iOS 4.3 and up so iPhone 3GS at minimum.

"...I guess I have to buy a new phone now.." - This is exactly why Apple dropped support to more than 50 million iDevices gen 1 & 2. They want to make more money and sell you new stuff.

Apple could easily require that app developers include iOS backward compatibility code but they don't care about owners of their devices sold just a few years ago.
