Looks cool!   Some issues I would like to point out without even looking at the code/testing, is that the contacts need special persmissions on restore, and that when backing up the springboard layout, that will not save your folders (which in itself will cause problems, as they will be hidden, but not in folders), and the springboard layout must have exactly the same apps installed, so do that first before restoring, rather than doing that first, otherwise you will be buggered.

Aside from that, brilliant work!

Also, I could help you with a small bit of code, such as automatically getting all appstore app data (quite easy), creating a .deb (very easy), and the GUI.  If you need/would like help that is ;)

I have a project from a while back that was something like this (multiple profiles/accounts on one device) with the ability to backup/restore in .deb format.  (GUI as well), so I could salvage some code if you would like.

i wil try to add the appstore code. thank you very much:) i already looked and the backup files have the same permissions.
i think tomorrow there be most of the things done.
i know how to make the deb but the gui will be hard for me, cause i just learnt it^^

This would be perfect for iCloud. We could have it so it uploads the backups to Dropbox. How would you restore the backup though?

Post by: realblack7 on August 14, 2011, 02:45:47 PM
ok i will make it icloud if you wish^^
ehm not the debs themselves are stored. it makes a list of things that are installed and when you restore there is a prompt and will ask you if you want to reinstall cydia apps.
it will ask for every app if whether you are sure or not to install it again

A new polished version is up. debugged alot.
Added Photo backup.
removed prompt to zip, does it automaticly now
Can anyone test if push certs are backup with this?
how to do this:
-make backup of the mail-wifi settings with passwords
-extraxt the keychain-2.zip from backup.zip
- go to var/Keychains and delete the 3 files in there(can also be 2 )
-respring
-test if push are working
-tell me if or if not
-put keychain.zip into var/Keychains and extract it
- are they working again or still working?

to test if they work use ipusher from appstore

You can't backup push certs by copying the keychain-2.zip file. You have to run nimble and then extract the certs.

ok. New Update ver0.4:
Fixed a hell lot of things, it is like completely redone.
View first post for more information.
I listed also the dependencies I faced, because not every command i use is installed by default when Cydia sets up

And most important, everything included in this release should work flawlessly( if there are errors it is not that bad because they won't force you to restore again, but give me the error message)

And again, if you want to mention something just do it^^

i hope you like this:)

whats tar.gz and why tp put that in backup folder....??
Title: Re: Backup Script[Big Update ver0.4]
Post by: realblack7 on August 22, 2011, 08:32:59 PM
ok...maybe i said it a bit confusing.
when you run this script all files are backup up as tar.gz files, they ar elike zip files. you can open them with 7-zip i think, though i don't think thi sis a good idea^^
When you restored you have to put you backup back into the Backup folder, so you can restore^^
This is what i meant by this

How did you get it to restore photos to camera roll? When i put pictures in var/mobile/Media/DCIM/100APPLE it doesn't work.

How did you get it to restore photos to camera roll? When i put pictures in var/mobile/Media/DCIM/100APPLE it doesn't work.
It won't work, because mobileslideshow.app doesn't know they exist. The Camera Rolls/Albums have a database file that describes the location of each image. If the image name is not in the database, it does not exist, what you do is delete a certain file, and the next time you launch MobileSlideshow, it will re-index the photo library. I can't remember the file name, but it has a pretty obvious name…
Title: Re: Backup Script[Big Update ver0.4]
Post by: realblack7 on August 24, 2011, 05:06:54 PM
it is working.because im backing up the database too...im not dumb.
You that's why you have to put the personaldata.tar.gz and the DCIM.tar.gz back zo restore. I seperated both archives, because I don't..I thought it is clever:D but maybe i change it back
When you want to have your pictures on the pc you only need to untar the DCIM.tar.gz

Update:
For changes look first post

Itunes syncing. What is meant by that?
So if made a backup of this and restored it, you can plug in you idevice after fresh install and iTunes willknow what apps you had installed, what music etc. and will sync them back then.

To let it sync music back you need to uncheck music syncing and aplly it, after the sync re-check it and sync hit aplly to sync the music back

Video is up and working:

whited00r 4.2.1 based on ios3? the latest whited00r release is 4.4.1

to come to your question. between ios 3 and ios 4 were some changes made:

sproingboard.plist does not contain the iconlayout information
notes are saved different
photos are saved different
safari bookmarks changed
and you shouldn't backup SMS-Settings

i think that are the biggest changes.
Th erest should be compatible, the cydia stuff works 100% on both verisons.

If you have issues please report me, here or via PM so I can make a fitting version for you(and everyone else)^^

after installing it open up terminal
type in 'su'( as always without ' ')
then your password( should be 'alpine)
then type ./backup

this opens my script.
you are asked whether you want to backup. hit 'y' and then enter.
you are asked then a lot of stuff. just go through this.
to restore do the same as above, but hit 'n' as your asked if you want to backup.
you are then asked whether you want to restore

hope this helps:)

yet, i don't know. bcooper gave me an upload script, maybe I get something managed. but this will be included after the GUI is done. I am correcting some stuff now and will upload a newer version with ios3folder support. and maybe the app icon I made for the later GUI.

but that stuff has still time. I want to have a working framework before including 'advanced' stuff^^

of course more updates. i am currently working on a big one.. i have list of things i want to change..now there are only cosmetic changes left...so I shouldn't take that long anymore to finish it.

I tried to make it more userfriendly and easier to use..include a fullbackup/fullrestore function. appstore app data backup/restore and minor improves overall( backup speed etc)

but it isn't finished yet^^

ver0.5.0.1:
-Hotfix in Appstore App Save Restore
-Hotfix in Camera Roll Restore

ver 0.5 Update:
A really really big one,too.
For the exact changes view the first post.

Here a screenshot of the new Menu
(http://i1124.photobucket.com/albums/l573/realblack7/IMG_0088.png)

Instead of entering the Menu you can also type in
Code: [Select]
realbackup -b
realbackup -r
or whatever

What is FullBackup:
It backs up everything you have without asking. Good for a overall Backup

What is FullRestore:
Restore everything you have backed up. Good for after a fresh install

What is update only:
This option does not add anything new to your Backup. It only updates the previously backed up stuff.
Good if you backed e.g Contacts and IconLayout and don't want to click through the script just to update these two

If you get any errors please to this:
start RealBackup with the Option that in which the error was and add this the line
2> /User/error.log
So it looks for example like this
Code: [Select]
realbackup -b 2> /User/error.log
Post the content of error.log here or PM me.
(Don't wonder that the error isn't displayed then anymore)

Please uninstall the old version before using this one
And remember Backups are now in /private/var/mobile/Backup !

Post by: realblack7 on September 23, 2011, 08:09:01 PM
thanks to both of you

And brian. it is actually pretty simple.
You just check if $1 is exists
Code: [Select]
if [ $1 ];  then
and if it does you check for its value..so like this
Code: [Select]
if  [ $1 ]; then

  if [ "$1" = "-h" ]; then
    echo "do option -h"
    /path/to/script
  elif [ "$1" = "-q" ]; then
    echo "do something else"
    /path/to/some/other/script
  else
echo "please type in a correct option"
echo "Yoiu can choose between -h and -q"
  fi
fi

You can look into the file /usr/bin/realbackup. this is handling the option stuff^^
so let's say..i cheated a bit:D

i think it when the thousands images was added to picture app.
(does not mean you have more than 1000 photos in photo app!)

And i have got an idea for dropbox:

ther are compiled dropbox versions for the iphone on internet, which you can use through terminal
-so what about using something like this for dropbox support?

In order to restore cydia apps, you cant have any apps installed right?
I learned that the hard way....
Title: Re: RealBackup[Update ver0.5.1] Bug Fixes
Post by: realblack7 on October 08, 2011, 07:45:22 PM
Sure you can have apps installed. but you should do a backup before you restore..otherwise it thinks you want to have no apps installed and removes every app.
AND it is asking you if you want to remove your apps before it does...

it says:
upgrade 0, update 0, remove 20 (something like that)
do you want to continue?

Title: Re: RealBackup[Update ver0.5.1] Bug Fixes

Ok I am restoring app data but it seems to be taking forever.
Its been 2 hours and it restores 1 app every 5 to 10 mins
I know I have alot (500 mb) of app data, but those are coming from a few main apps, the rest are only 10-20 mb.

Title: Re: RealBackup[Update ver0.5.1] Bug Fixes
Post by: realblack7 on October 08, 2011, 10:16:22 PM
for that reason i made the check if you want to really back those things up. you should really only back things up from app data if you really needs it.

i have to ignore to things. wikipedia (1 GB) and wedict pro ( 50mb). the rest is like 15 mb.
In my Gui you can exclude apps from backup. sry that it is taking so long. but that is not the fault my code. it is too much data i think for he 2g. i backedup my wikipedia once in about 35 mins.
Title: Re: RealBackup[Update ver0.5.1] Bug Fixes
Post by: applepie on October 08, 2011, 10:39:03 PM
Its like the same speed for every app.
I dont think it would take 5 mins to restore 20 mb...
The app with the largest app data has 200 mb.
I have like 50 apps, and like 5 have over 100 mb.

U mean ur save data got vanished from those directories?
Maybe script did a CUT PASTE,instead of COPY PASTE ;)
Title: Re: RealBackup[Update ver0.5.1] Bug Fixes
Post by: realblack7 on October 09, 2011, 08:22:03 AM
did you lock your screen? it makes everything slower. and sry i dont know what wen wrong here. it was working for me.
you can manually copy the stuff back...but is not what is meant tobe, right?
extract appstore.tar.gz. there should be folders with the app name. in each of the folder is a Documents and Library folder. these has to be moved to there correct app folder.

i really dont know what went wrong, though I think it has something to do with the last update.
can you check if there are files in application folders. maybe that are the wrong files.
and when you extract the backup. are there errors? or folders missing. do your apps have those sruff in their names:äøü etc?
Title: Re: RealBackup[Update ver0.5.1] Bug Fixes
Post by: applepie on October 10, 2011, 12:04:30 AM
I extracted the app save folder and it does have the saves in it. However, after restoring app data, I checked the actual app's documents folder, and it was empty.

Its doing something, because it takes several hours. It just isn't doing what it needs to do :P

no matter. i got the gui done. i debug it and by the end of the week i release it( though it is really bug proven right now).

and the reason i made this thing is i wanted to have one backup app instead 3.

ah btw: it can upload now to FTP servers
Title: Re: RealBackup[Update ver0.6] Now with 100% more GUI
Post by: realblack7 on October 20, 2011, 08:29:35 PM
UPDATE!!

Okay..here is it. RealBackup finally got its GUI.
It is fully iOS3 and iOS4 compatible.

You can upload backups to your FTP server. you can choose if you want to upload after every backup or if you want to start the upload manually. You can choose what you want to upload.

I made a little help option, so the most common questions should be answered there. But here is a tip.
The app has voice commands to tell you want it is doing right now. So people with speaker, turn them on, and people without use your headphone.
The app Closes after a successfull backup/restore, so you can also leave it open(please set Autolock to never) and when you are on your springboard again it is done.

iOS4 people with native multitasking can, I guess, also minimize it.

Yeah that should be it. Ehm..Enjoy^^

lets say you can use it like that if you have an ftp. but with the knowledge from writing that i will write a icloud 'clone'. it will be as close as i can get it.

but this program was written to have one instead of 3 backup programs installed that has also more functionality. i have a long list at home of things to add, but the problem is , when i do not get any feedback i can merely debug it because i cant test everything, and if it id time toadd stuff or debug this versiom first.

and i think i forgot that. you need Sudo from bcooperizcool to get this program working.

I already have a GUI, so it is a real App. Go to my Repo and install the the new RealBackup and uninstall the old one.

But thanks for your effort.
And the iphone thing..I guess since you took it once apart and it worked you can do it a second time^^ maybe you siomply forgot a connector or something like that

minor changes, but i got rid off the need of sudo!
So it should work after installation. It might crash upon first launch. but after that it should work properly

Hi,

I just installed realbackup but it just crashes after clicking on it. I tried restarting, reinstalling and more but the same thing happens. Is there something I'm doing wrong?

Using iphone 3g on 4.2.1.

I installed it via the realbackup repository.

I dont have sudo installed as I was under the impression it wasnt needed for 0.6.2.

Thanks!

no it is for both firmwares(ios 3 and 4)

that is weird. a friend told me the same, but i dont know why KEEPS crashing.
for me it crashes on first start and then works.

can you look into this file /User/Library/Preferences/com.realblack7.realbackup.plist

there should be a key called 'iosversion' with the value 4
if this is empty add the 4 manually and see if it works then

Hi, i did a backup on wd4 and tried to restore on wd5 but appstore app data weren't restored! Everything else (but cydia apps) was ok, but appstore app data saves don't...how can i solve this problem?

And can you also add a feature to save contacts' photos to a backup?

Hey realblack7,

Thanks for the reply. I checked and I already has the value of 4 in place so no luck there. Just to try it, I tried leaving it blank as well as deleting the file to see if it would recreate it, but the same thing happens.

Anything else you want me to check?

try this:
go to /Applications/RealBackup.app and open the file called 'RealBackup'

replace the content which looks like this
Code: [Select]
#!/bin/bash
echo "loaded" > /Library/RealBackup/Launcher/loaded
launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.realblack7.launcher.plist
productversion=$(plutil -key iosversion /private/var/mobile/Library/Preferences/com.realblack7.realbackup.plist | cut -c 1)

        exec "${dir}"/RealBackup_iOS4
elif [ "$productversion" = "3" ]; then
        dir=$(dirname "$0")
        exec "${dir}"/RealBackup_iOS3
fi

with this:
Code: [Select]

launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.realblack7.launcher.plist

        dir=$(dirname "$0")

and check if RealBackup_iOS4 is chmodded 0755

Hey realblack7,

Thanks for the suggestion.

I went ahead and replaced the text, then I went in and changed the permissions to 0755 instead of 0775 on the iOS_4 file. Rebooted and tried but it does the same thing. Tried reinstalling and then performing the same steps, but the outcome was the same. Just to try I also tried changing the permissions on the RealBackup.app folder and all contents, but it made no difference.

For what its worth, before making the changes, when it was first installed, it would lauch and I would get the program name at the top with a black program background which would hang for a few seconds before crashing. After making the change it instantly crashes without staying open for a few seconds. Just to make sure I did another reinstall and sure enough it will hang for a few seconds again.

If there is anything else you want me to try just let me know.

Thanks for all your help.

i uploaded a beta of the version 0.7 on my repo.

install it and tell me if this is crashing too. this would mean that the executable is incompatible with iOS 4.2.1

another to suggestions:
chown root:admin /Applications/RealBackup.app/RealBackup_iOS4

or try this:
go to /Applications/Preferences.app and copy the file 'Preferences' to the RealBackup.app
then delete RealBackup_iOS4 and rename Preferences to it.

maybe the 4.2.1 exe works on 4.3.3. then i can simply exchange them:)

Hey realblack7,

Initially I tried to find the 0.7 beta version you mentioned, but for some reason I didn't see it with your other files. Not sure what I was doing wrong.

So I went ahead and tried the chown method, and it did the same problem as before.

However, next I tried to copy over the preferences file like you suggessted. I opened it and it crashed, but the next time I tried, it opened right up!

That seemed to do the trick. I have it going right now, and so far it seems to be working. It's taken 4 hours to transfer 200 megs, so I'm not sure if it thats about right time wise, but all in all it seems to be working great!

I really appreciate all the help and suggestions you gave to get it working!

iCloud is really only for restoring Game/App data (Is better than Realbackup in that sense).

RealBackup is better for restoring Cydia repos, preferences (although that can mess your device up sometimes), contacts, icon layout, and just all around preference settings.

(iCloud is also a little faster in restoring app/game data)

you have to try that on your own. i only know from ios4 to ios5 is incompable. and i think ios4 is able to read ios3 contacts. but if it works other way around dont know.

there is a way on linux to extract the contacts, though you need to put them back in manually

You could make a toggle to see if you should keep the error logs ;)  Useful for you maybe, if people wish to submit them to you.  Just have it check at the end whether to keep them or not.

well you could just have it check one switch, and add in code to remove all the logs,

so
Code: [Select]
if [[ "$variable_for_deletion" == "Yes" ]];
then rm -rf file_1; rm -rf file_2; #etc
         fi

then its all together ;)   and you can still have them seperate :P

Hello,

I need some help please,  :-[

I was running an older version of whited00r, I think it was the ios 3 unlocker version.

I came across realbackup the other day on this forum and thought it was a good time to upgrade to the current whited00r 5.1 unlocker version.

I added realblack7's repo in cydia and installed realbackup beta 0.7b8.

I made a full backup of the phone, went into all the options and selected all the switches in all the menus so as to cover everything.

Realbackup made the folder in /var/mobile/Sez-Phone-120317-21:18 and the /Appstore App Data subfolder.
It all came to about 27MB in total.

I copied the files out to my desktop using iphonebrowser and then updated the phone to WD5.1

Once up and running I re-installed the realblack7 repo in cydia and re-installed realbackup and then copied the files back to the phone retaining the file structure as before.

I launched the app which seemed to see the backup and listed it in the restore section, i configured the restore, said yes to the "are you sure" prompt, and after a while the app closed back to the home screen, which i assume meant it was complete as it did this on the backup the first time round.

The problem is that it hasn't actually restored anything!

The SMS db for example was empty as was the call records, also none of the apps have their data back, and there a few i needed the data from.

The tar files all seem to have the required data in as i manually put the sms.db (var/Mobile/Library/SMS) back on the phone to test and it worked.

I have all the tar.gz files from the backup, but just cant seem to restore them, any help is greatly appreciated as this is my GF's phone and she needed some of the data that was in the apps.

Many thanks in advance,

Kai.

the backup looks like this:
in var/mobile/Backup is a folder with your backup files. in this folder(its name is the backup name) are some tarballs(personaldata.tar.gz, cydia.tar.gz, etc) and a Folder containing the tarballs of your appstore app saves.

did you configured the appstore app sata restore or did you just enabled it?

Hello,

ok, it looks like i may have overlooked the app store toggles in the backup.

I just did a wipe and re-install of WD5.1, synced the apps from itunes, then ran the backup again.
I compared the files sizes from the previous backup and the current one and they appear to be the same.
My guess is i didnt backup the data!

if im wrong and the logs show anything up please let me know as I will keep hold of the first backup just incase.

Many thanks for all your help.

Installed Cydia and Realbackup 0.6.2 on iOS 4.2.1. No errors during installation that I noticed

Realbackup does not start. Just goes back to home screen. Restarted phone, no difference.

Installed the current realbackup beta directly after that. Got some errors during install -

Preparing RealBackup-beta
x Sub-process/usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)
x trying to overwrite '/Applications/RealBackup.app/About', which is also in package com.myrepospace.realblack7.realbackup

Any advice on resolving these issues?

Btw, my overall plan is to backup from iOS 4.2.1 then install Whited00r and restore data to that. Do you think that will work?

Thanks!

Continuing from above - I click backup in RealBackup (beta) after enabling all personal data items and personal data.

I have volume turned up, but there is no audio indication and after a second or so RB closes and I see the home screen again.

SSH in as root. There is no data in /var/mobile/Backup. I can find no logs belonging to RB in /Library/Logs.

This is a 3G running iOS 4.2.1.

Are you able to assist?  :D

you installed the beta from my repo right? repo.realblack7.bplaced.net
you said that you enabled everything, but did you enable the personal data in detail? becuase you can also choose what you want to backup from the personal data panel(e.g. contacts)

are popups showing up`? like: do you wan to start the backup?yes/no

is launchtl working for you? open terminal and type in:
su
alpine
launchctl list

and tell me if it is working or not

I installed both from http://cydia.myrepospace.com/realblack7/   - is that ok? should i remove and reinstall from the repo you named?

I enabled (On) every item in Configure Backup > Personal Data Backup, and also enabled Configure Backup > Do you want to backup? > Personal Data > On

I'm getting no popups or prompts after choosing Backup. The option is selected, remains selected for 10 seconds, after that the app exits back to the home screen. No prompts or popups.

I'll try the terminal next and come back in a sec.

is launchtl working for you? open terminal and type in:
su
alpine
launchctl list
and tell me if it is working or not

I installed your terminal 521-1. I executed 'launchtl list' from there. The command executes and displays several screens worth of listing.

I have to tell you, my password is not 'alpine'. I changed it after installing OpenSSH, so I'm using the new password to get this listing.

uninstall realbackup and all its dependencies, then install it again from my repo

Install the release version or beta?
Title: Re: RealBackup
Post by: woodfix on May 13, 2012, 01:41:05 PM
Installed from your correct repo. Got the same behavior from the release version there.

Better behavior from the Beta in your correct repo (now 0.7b8) this time.

I set the 'Configure' options the same as before and then clicked 'Backup'. This time I got a prompt, I chose 'yes'. After that I got another prompt to set a name for the backup.

I set a name in Options (first name was "421may14-1am") and backed out of that area. Going back to the main screen 'Backup' is still selected (blue) and pressing it has no effect. Went back and changed the name to "421may" in case it does not like the hyphen. Backed out of that area, still the same. Restarted iPhone. (There was a 'do you want to start the backup' prompt when I started the iPhone, but I missed it and unlocking the screen dismissed the prompt) Started app, clicked Backup, chose 'Yes' to the prompt.

Btw, no sound at all during these actions. Turned it up to max prior to starting.

OpenSSH is now showing some data in /var/mobile/Backup. I will get that out of there tomorrow and see what I have. Is there any method to verify that backup data before I install Whited00r?

I checked /Library/Logs to see if there was an operations log. I could not see anything obvious there.

Is the only data I need to copy out of there \var\mobile\Backup\421may ?

I will return to continue some more in approx 10 hours. Thanks for your assistance on this one.

this versoin has no sounds. just alerts.
in the 421may folder should be all the backup files. they have tar.gz as name ending.

could you send me the logs?
and you are going from 4.2.1 to 3.1.3 right? from 3.1.3 it is possible to just restore and everythings fine. i did not try the other way around

Yes, that is correct. I'm sorry, where do I find the logs exactly and the exact name? No luck finding them so far.

Also, in this version is there intended to be a completion notify/prompt displayed after the backup is complete? I'm not seeing one. Is that expected for this version?
Title: Re: RealBackup
Post by: realblack7 on May 13, 2012, 03:05:18 PM
i think there is a message saying" Closing now.." and before that i think a "backup complete" or so.
the logs are supposed to be in:
/Library/RealBackup/Logs
just give me the whole folder
Title: Re: RealBackup
Post by: woodfix on May 14, 2012, 05:22:39 AM
I tried with Camera Roll preference 'Off'. The backup completes quickly and exits to main screen. There is no completion notification message. After that my location contains:

-rw-r--r-- 1 root mobile 299K May 14 14:56 Recordings.tar.gz
-rw-r--r-- 1 root mobile 634K May 14 14:56 personaldata.tar.gz

Is that a successful backup?

I also tried again with Camera Roll 'On'. I'm monitoring the creation of DCIM.tar (with SSH). Creation is very slow. I have just under 700MB of photos - after 3 hours DCIM.tar has reached only 192MB.

I'd like to suggest a new version using zero compression for the photos and any archive which will contain them. Wrap only. There is little to be gained by compressing JPG's. :)

I've attached the logs. There is very little in them. Do they overwrite each run? Hopefully they are no longer needed if the mysteries are mostly solved.

well. photos are uncompressed. as you see it is saved as dcim.tar not dcim.tar.gz

so you just backed up personal data and recordings. every category has its own tarball

Thanks for pointing that out. I'm new to 'nix. It just surprised me that it took so long for a .tar wrap.

Any way of speeding up or optimizing that process? At present it is looking like (guestimate) six hours or so, which just seems a bit excessive.

so you just backed up personal data and recordings.

Yes, that's correct. I'd like to get the photos if possible as well, but I'm not sure I can leave the phone on the desk for the required amount of time.

Would it be simple for me to perform the entire process (or maybe just the photos) manually with scp directory copies - or does Realbackup do a lot of db attach/detach type stuff to make it all work?

 :D

Yes, that is correct. I'm planning to take my data off 4.2.1 iOS, put Whited00r on the same phone, and then restore the data to Whited00r 3.1.3 on the same phone.

from 3.1.3 it is possible to just restore and everythings fine. i did not try the other way around

Are you saying the path of backup on 4.2.1 (iOS) and then a restore to 3.1.3 (Whited00r) is not tested and therefore it might not work?

Sorry for the question, I just need to make sure I understand what I'm in for here. ;D

yup thats it. ios4 may read ios3, but it is not clear if ios3 is able to understand ios4 files. though if i remember right there were obly small differences, which one could solve by renaming.
the most changes were in ios4 and ios5.
Title: Re: RealBackup

Thanks for that. I'll compare the db structure of each file from 4 to 3 before I run the restore. I might also restrict the restore to - sms history, contacts and perhaps photos.

If I need to modify a database file before the restore - can I just manually update and replace that file in the realbackup archive? Will the restore process be happy to go ahead after an update to the archive?

Meanwhile, still doing the backup, my DCIM.tar has reached 475MB after 19.5 hours. Hopefully that completes before I desperately need to use the device lol.  :)

Unfortunately it's only added 8MB to DCIM.tar in the last hour, so it looks like it is grinding to a halt.

I'm thinking i might need to do something to increase the RAM available and try again.

Every time I start the phone - realbackup asks me if I want to start the backup?

Is there a way to turn off this option?
Also, how does it do this?

thanks

i think that happens when you forcefully close the realbackup when it in the process of doing the backup....
had the same problem....since it was just released at that time and realblack7 said he would release a tutorial i uninstalled.....
the previous version works the best and didnt cause a problem :/

Another interesting thing - after exiting RealBackup DCIM.tar is still growing. I don't have multitasking enabled. Is this a bug or expected behavior?

it might still be in the background o.O.... completing the task you set to it....

since 'quitted' the backup it is adding know nonesense data/the same data over and over.

to make it stop do this:
go to /User/Library/Preferences and delete com.realblack7.realbackup.plist
then do a hard reset and everything should be back to normal
Title: Re: RealBackup
Post by: woodfix on May 15, 2012, 06:34:43 AM
I deleted the file and hard reset afterwards. Now I have a new problem - realbackup does not start. I am returned instantly to the home screen.

Reinstall RB?
Title: Re: RealBackup
Post by: realblack7 on May 15, 2012, 08:04:06 AM
try a normal reboot. maybe launchctl is not loaded correctly.
and if this is not working, really reinstall realbackup. are you sure you deleted the correct file?^^
Title: Re: RealBackup
Post by: woodfix on May 15, 2012, 09:11:12 AM
I still have the terminal history. Definitely deleted the specified file.

My-iPhone:/User/Library/Preferences root# rm com.realblack7.realbackup.plist

No change after a normal restart. I reinstalled RB.

Looking at top during operation. Each JPEG is currently taking 5.50 seconds of CPU time to go into the archive. In realtime that's about 40 seconds. My guess is this increases as the archive grows in size. It is currently 128MB. When it was at 67MB it was under 2 seconds CPU time and 11 seconds realtime.

I think I'm going to try running my own tar and integrate that with the RB archive package. Or something like that. Any suggestions appreciated..

So I freed a bit of RAM using Sinful's Daemon Tool. Then rebooted and began again with realbackup.

I'm about 15 hours in, DCIM.tar size 395MB. Freeing some ram did not make a huge difference unfortunately.

PS gives the command line as "/usr/bin/tar -prf /private/var/mobile/Backup/may14b2/DCIM.tar IMG_0739.JPG" (of about 1200)

Each file is added to the archive individually, and then another file is added, and so on.

I wonder if this process would be much faster if the approach was tar of the directory instead? :-\

Closer to when the process started ([email protected]) tar time for each file was 11 seconds realtime (reading under 2 seconds CPU time).

The current tar time for each jpg is approx 3 minutes 20 seconds realtime. (reading 23 seconds CPU time) - and getting longer all the time.

As you can see, this will take a really long time to complete.

So, my backup finally completed. Yay!

But there is a problem - RealBackup requires an enhancement/bugfix relating to 'Camera Roll'. Here's why:

When you are shooting photos with iPhone, the photos are put in a folder called DCIM/100APPLE. Until...

You reach 999 photos - the next 999 photos are placed in a new directory DCIM/101APPLE (etc).

RealBackup does not capture from DCIM/101APPLE. (Note: The BTH and THM files for /101APPLE are in the archive correctly).

I'll tar those files in DCIM/101APPLE manually, and untar them on the destination :  ).

That should work right?

Logs attached.

I installed realbackup and all went fine and dandy...but when I clicked on the app icon, it opened, then closed before showing the program. I tried this a few times, to no avail...no joy there. And then, to make matters worse, I tried to uninstall the cydia installed cycorder, which had never worked, and during the removal process cydia got stuck on 'preparing to remove tape archive'. An hour or three later, cydia vanished altogether.

Is there any other way to install Realbackup to my phone????

I am waiting to backup my sms/contacts so that i can install whited00r and then restore contacts/sms.

are there any other ways to do this other than realbackup???

please help!
