Title: IPA media manager needed
Post by: Bruan on October 24, 2011, 03:10:43 PM
As you may have noticed, iTunes is slowly dropping support for 3.1.3 apps, this has prompted my decision, with the suggestion of others, to make an .ipa section on the media page.    We are in need of someone to manage this, making sure that there are no cracked apps at all!  Not even if they were free for a day!

Looking for a more senior member of whited00r, or someone who has proven themselves trustworthy, and is able to go through a lot of apps and make sure there are no duplicates, and get apps on the media page within two days.

They would need to have a topic kept up to date of all the apps that are sent to them, so that others do not send multiple ones ;)

That is all :P

also, if other whited00r staff do not approve of this, then I shall take this down, just ask me :)

What if they are free in the app store, but we get an earlier version from installous?

For example, Vlingo, a Voice Activation app is free in the appstore, but the current version, 1.2.0, can not run on the iPhone 2G, even though it states it can. But I can get version 1.0.3, the last version supported for iPhone 2G/IOS 3 in installous. Is that acceptable?

That's fine :)

and it might turn out we need more than one manager, so I would make all of you able to, giving you a custom title and whatnot with permissions to post in there.

Multiple managers is good. I might not be able to manage it every day. However I am trying to download a lot of free apps that still support 3.0 so if they drop support  I can post them. If others could also do this it would be helpful.

I just got a response from vlingo support and they said ios3 is not supported, so please post the ipa!

If u all are going to do it then divide the stuff in some ways ,like 1 will do some games,1 will do accesories,1 will do photo apps,1 will do social apps...else all will do all apps and it will take more time+bandwidth...
so divide the plan before u start..

No because we want the most Ipas possible so we should pool them togeter. The person who gets to post the ipa is the first person on.

yes we want most ipa's ,but just consider the case
1. i and u started downloading a big ipa [like 200-500MB] on the same time.
2. i have low net speed and u have high speed.
3. ur download is finished and mine is almost done, and i see that u posted the same ipa that i was gonna post,

so wasnt it wastage of time?i could have downloaded something else in that same time..?
so my point is to let the each manager know that what u r gonna post..or else just divide the sections

Maybe even take it in shifts, so you cover some things some days and other things on other days.

I would really like to help out.
I will do games, education, and sports, but I will try and help out everyone.
I have already downloaded the top 50 apps in games and sports that still support 3.1.3 (in case support is dropped later), and am working to get the top 200 and to do this in other categories too.

I also have an idea for that. namely iCloud.
What do one needs:
1. A server
2. every whited00r user needs an id (e.g. e-mail address)
3. A database of valid apps in categories like
 ALL | iOS4+
4. ipas named like their app folders

Then i would be able to write a feature for icloud so it knows what apps you have installed if you  have another deive with my icloud it would be possible to automatically install it on that device too.

But i guees that are more or less dreams...

Of sorts.  It can bypass Cydia's need to reload/reinstall packages just for a simple image update and such.   I have an already partially working dependency system, as well as code bits for installing apps via shell :)

This will also be a center to download my versions of whited00r in .deb form when I get around to making them :P

It will dynamically build itself as well, for my future apps/other peoples apps and such.

I am getting concerned about 3.x support.
In the "new and noteworthy" section of the app store, there was only one free app that supported 3.x. And that app crashed upon opening. The issues is most devs just dont have a device to test compatibility so they just assume it doesn't work and say it needs 4.x or assume it works and say it need 3.x, wait for the reviews, then either try again at making it compatible or just say it needs 4.x

OK, make people without a rank, app uploaders (active people like applepie)
People with ranks, eg. team support members don't need a rank to upload them...

After you did that make a topic where only staff members and also the app uploaders can post (so they have 1 privelege: post in that topic)
This will prevent the topic of being filled by spam

Also make another topic for requests. This would be usefull.

Hopefully the media section will be restored soon.

the loss of the media section actually leaves way (in my eyes) for a long needed redesign of it. Who knows what this "unfortunate" mishap could bring.

We should add a section to the main whited00r site or have a big external page (like on a media hosting site) with all the downloads. The forum could explode again and if we use the whited00r site we should defiantly back it up very often (it would be a disaster to lose a couple hundred valuable ipas).

yes, mediafire is the way to go I say. No bandwith reduction, no captcha images, straight forward downloading.
Great idea applepie!

but it took forever to load mediafire on mobile after they updated their website :(

For media fire we could just have one user account for all uploaders so all ipas will be on one page. However something mobile optimized would be good

mobiles good. As bcooperizcool said before we need to have people that screen the submitted .ipas, we dont want cracked or bad ipas on the site. And I think one person should use the mediafire account. so the ipa moderators give the good ipas to the account holder and he uploads them. Preferably someone with fast internet!  ;)
Overall the mobile part is easy to do, applepie you showed me before how to change the whited00r.com theme to mobile. So we should just have a part of the whited00r site that is just links to good mediafire ipa links.
