Title: [Solved] iPhone 3G Free Unlock Baseband 05.15.04 05.14.02 - No Service Searching
Post by: hallogram on December 29, 2012, 12:33:51 PM
Edit 2013-04-26 by PierreP: Try first the Whited00r tutorial - Downgrade iPad Baseband on iPhone 3G to Unlock (http://www.whited00r.com/tutorial-downgrade3g) which includes a custom firmware that let's you skip the steps 1 & 2 below.  ;) If it fails then follow steps 2, 3 & 4 below which worked absolutely fine for me on several iPhone 3G running iOS 3.1.3 or iOS 4.2.1 and impossible to carrier unlock Modem Firmware (a.k.a baseband or bb) 05.15.04 using my laptop running Windows 7 64-bit.

*****

If your iPhone 3G is running with > Settings > General > About > Modem Firmware: 05.15.04 or 05.14.02 and your SIM is working with cellular service then you have a Factory Unlocked device or the original SIM so you do not need this tutorial!

If your iPhone 3G is Factory Unlocked, you do not have to upgrade/downgrade your Baseband 05.15.04 because the point of this process is to be able to carrier unlock it to be able to use SIM's from any cellular provider. Just follow the instructions here: Whited00r Installation Tutorial (http://www.whited00r.com/installation) and install Whited00r Normal Version.

*****

All other users, follow the tutorial below to free unlock your iPhone 3G on Modem Firmware 05.15.04 or 05.14.02 (a.k.a. Baseband or BB).

HELLO WORLD!

Here is my tutorial on how to upgrade and downgrade your iPhone 3G and free carrier unlock it if you're stuck with the impossible to unlock 05.15.04 or 05.14.02 baseband:

Free Software we will be using on a Windows computer:
- sn0wbreeze 2.9.6 (http://github.com/downloads/iH8sn0w/sn0wbreeze/sn0wbreeze-v2.9.6.zip) - custom firmware creator
- redsn0w 0.9.6rc16 (http://sites.google.com/a/iphone-dev.com/files/home/redsn0w_win_0.9.6rc16.zip?attredirects=0&d=1) - for upgrading locked baseband 05.15.04 to the unlockable iPad baseband 06.15.00
- redsn0w 0.9.14b2 (http://sites.google.com/a/iphone-dev.com/files/home/redsn0w_win_0.9.14b2.zip?attredirects=0&d=1) - for downgrading iPad Baseband 6.15.00 without GPS to iPhone baseband 5.13.04 unlocked and perfectly working GPS
- the official iPhone iOS 4.2.1 firmware (http://www.felixbruns.de/iPod/firmware/)
- iREB r6 for Windows (https://sites.google.com/site/toolsforwhited00r/home/tools-for-whited00r/iREBWindows.zip?attredirects=0&d=1) (more stable than the current iREB r7) & [f0recast (http://ih8sn0w.com/). A new iREB for Mac (http://ih8sn0w.com/) is available.

1. Use sn0wbreeze 2.9.6 to create a custom firmware based on the official 4.2.1.
1a. Start sn0wbreeze and hit OK
1b. Click the arrow, browse for the 4.2.1 official firmware, click the arrow
   1c. Click Expert mode
1d. Click General and hit the arrow
1e. Check all the options and leave the root partition size as it is and hit the arrow
1f. Check install iPad baseband and hit the arrow
1g. Custom boot logo (as you wish), hit the arrow
1h. Skip the custom apps, hit the arrow
1i. Select Build IPSW and hit the arrow
1j. The waiting game (stick with the spinner or play PacMan)
1k. After it's done it will guide you to put your phone in DFU mode.
1l. With your phone in DFU mode start iTunes and on the iPhone restore Shift+Restore and select the sn0wbreeze firmware saved on your desktop.
1m. It should start restoring your phone. (another waiting game)
1n. After the process is finished you should go to Settings > General > About and at the bottom there should be Modem Firmware: 6.15.00

2. ***only for those who still don't have the iPad baseband 06.15.00 after step 1 | the rest of you go to step 3***
2a. Connect your iPhone to the computer. Hold the lock button and swipe to shut down the phone.
2b. Open redsn0w 0.9.6rc16 (if you're using Windows Vista/7/8 right click it and Run as Administrator)
2c. Click Browse and select the official 4.2.1 firmware. Wait and click Next
2d. From the list deselect everything and select only Install iPad baseband and click Next
2e. If you know how to put your phone to DFU mode you can do it right now, if you don't click Next and follow the instructions
2f. With the phone in DFU mode redsn0w will start to update the baseband. (yes...another waiting game)
!!! DO NOT DISCONNECT THE PHONE DURING PROCESS !!!
2g. Phone reboots and you should have the baseband 6.15.00 at Settings > General > About

3. Using redsn0w 0.9.14b2 (Windows) (https://sites.google.com/a/iphone-dev.com/files/home/redsn0w_win_0.9.14b2.zip?attredirects=0&d=1) to downgrade Baseband 06.15.00 to 05.13.04
3a. Shut down the phone again
   3b. Start redsn0w 0.9.14b2 (if you're using Windows Vista/7/8: right-click redsn0w.exe and Run as Administrator)
3c. Click Extras > Select IPsW > browse for the 4.2.1 official firmware > OK > Back
3d. Click Jailbreak > *preparing jailbreak data* > select ONLY Downgrade from iPad baseband > Next > Put phone in DFU mode or follow the instructions for that
   3e. Yey! Another waiting game!
!!! DO NOT DISCONNECT THE PHONE DURING PROCESS !!! It could take up to 10 minutes to complete.
3f. iPhone reboots and here you go! Now you should have the 5.13.04 baseband at Settings > General > About > and scroll down to Modem Firmware (a.k.a. baseband).
3g. If the Modem Firmware field is blank: turn off the iPhone, wait a couple of seconds turn on and do it again. If the data is still blank after restarting twice then follow the Restore to iPhone OS 3.1.3 chapter in the Whited00r tutorial - Downgrade iPad Baseband on iPhone 3G to Unlock (http://www.whited00r.com/tutorial-downgrade3g)

4. Use the free iREB to put the iPhone 3G in iReb PWNED DFU mode (http://www.google.com/search?q=iReb+PWNED+DFU+mode) before using iTunes to update to the Whited00r 6 firmware and prevent iTunes errors 1015, 16xx, 1600, 1601, 1602, 1603 & 1604. You can also use iREB if you are stuck in a Recovery Mode Loop after flashing Whited00r:

After all this trouble you can now install Whited00r 6.0 Unlocked version by following the Whited00r Tutorial - Installation (http://www.whited00r.com/installation.php) - Whited00r will not change your new Baseband!

And don't forget to reboot twice before making any modifications to the iPhone as explained in the tutorial and set the iPhone as New in iTunes.

Original post:

Hello world!

So...it's been 3 days since i'm trying to install whited00r on my iPhone 3g with no luck.
I have an iPhone 3G running iOS 4.2.1 on baseband 05.15.04-6.4_M3S2 (tinyumbrella info).
The software that i used: redsn0w_win_0.9.15b3, iREB-r6, tinyumbrella-6.01.01 and the firmwares: iOS 4.2.1 iPad Baseband, iOS 4.2.1 official, whited00r 6.0.

Following the tutorial on whited00r web page did not help me. After i install whited00r 6.0 i can't get any network and signal to my phone. So after some searching i found that my baseband can't be unlocked so i have to upgrade to iPad baseband and after that downgrade.

So here's the big problem.
If i install using iTunes the firmware that you provide in tutorial (iOS 4.2.1 iPad Baseband) still no network or signal for my phone and in Settings > General> About the baseband is the same 05.15.04.
Trying to install the iPad baseband using redsn0w dosn't work. I selesct the 4.2.1 official firmware, i hit jailbreak, in the list i only check install iPad baseband, put the phone in DFU mode, it loads the ramdisk etc., but my phone remains on a black light screen (no info, no pineapple logo no nothing) and the process fails. Tried this several times.
I did a fresh install of my windows system run the process again managed to get it work on the phone, but after the redsn0w finished and rebooted my phone it got stuck at the apple logo.
Now i'm back to the black light screen and nothing seems to work.

Any idea on how to make it work?

Thank you.

Edit 2013-01-10: See also this thread with 2 other solutions: [Solved] whited00r 6 Iphone 3G NO SERVICE/NO MOBILE NETWORK/05.15.04 (http://www.whited00r.com/forum/index.php?topic=7243.0)

=====

I would suggest to edit your thread title with relevant keywords to attract experts who may know how to solve your problem like so for example:  iPhone 3G Carrier Unlock Problem Baseband 05.15.04

I'm a bit confused, which firmware, baseband & bootloader you have on the phone currently?

Have you tried the suggestions here? whited00r Tutorial - Carrier Unlock for iPhone 3G & Baseband (http://www.whited00r.com/tutorial-unlock3g.php)

You could also try the iClarified Unlock wizard for iPhone 3G: http://www.iclarified.com/unlock/iphone3g/baseband.php

You might find some solutions using site:www.whited00r.com Baseband 05.15.04 (https://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=site%3Awww.whited00r.com+Baseband+05.15.04)

After unlocking I would install the whited00r 6 Unlocked version on top of 4.2.1 if that is what you have currently.

FWIW my baseband is 05.13.04 on iPhone 3G running whited00r 6 and it is working fine.

hello my frien look donwload the ios 4.2.1 original from here  http://www.felixbruns.de/iPod/firmware/
later donwload sn0wbreeze version v2.9.6 not the last v2.9.7 from here http://ih8sn0w.com/
and later open the program select the ios previously downloaded and create a custom firmware how i'll show u
1-click expert mode
2- general
3- select enable battery percentage
4- if u want native multitasking and home wallpaper
5- activate the iphone (hactivate)
6- install shsh
after that come a window with a cartel ( install baseband ipad check this is the most important for u right now, and later come a window with a custom boot logo and if u wat this ok if not click in the box, and later the process begins wait to it ends and follow the steps for put your iphone in DFU mode, the new ios will be created on the desktop,
now shift and restore bottom in itunes and select the new ios from the desktop, remember follow the steps to put your iphone in DFU mode, after all installation  of the neww ios custom you goin to have the baseband 6.15 and it cam be unlock with the sn0wbreeze, now you can start all the process of the whited00r thing if u want best regard  ;)

@PierreP

Model: iPhone 3G
Firmware: 4.2.1
Baseband: 05.15.04-6.4_M3S2 (i think the 6.4_M3S2 is the bootloader)

I've followed the tutorials here on whited00r but no success.
As the tutorial says for my baseband: "5.14.04: upgrade your baseband to 6.15.00 and then downgrade to 5.12.01." and I've explained in the first post what happened when i tried to upgrade baseband :)

Using the unlocked version still the same...no signal or network.

@Julio Cesar

After creating the .ipsw with sn0wbreeze 2.9.6 and putting the phone in DFU mode the shift+restore in iTunes gives me the 1600 error.

Exact Bootloader version is important. I've read somewhere that with some of them you can't downgrade the Baseband back to 05.xx so you get stuck in iPad baseband 6.15 so no GPS anymore on iPhone 3G with that one.

Could be useful: Tutorial: downgrade the iPhone 3G baseband 6.15.00 (http://en.kioskea.net/faq/12620-tutorial-downgrade-the-iphone-3g-baseband-6-15-00)

@PierreP

the bootloader is 6.4_M3S2

@Julio Cesar

Nope. After a long waiting i get the 1604 error.

Nope. After a long waiting i get the 1604 error.

Just a few days ago this guy solved error 1604 by using iReb: http://www.whited00r.com/forum/index.php?topic=7120.msg68579#msg68579

It could also be a connection problem/bad cable too.

It's not a cable problem. Restoring the official 4.2.1 and it works. I'll try to make the .ipws again with sn0wbreeze.
About that bootloader...i remember i've read on redsn0w blog that some newer 3GS have the problem of remaining stuck with iPad baseband, saying that 3G work just fine.  :-\

I always remove the SIM when flashing a phone.

After flashing turn off phone, wait a few seconds, turn on, and do it again.

Then turn off, make sure SIM contacts are clean, insert, start the phone.

currently I have: iPhone 3G 4.2.1 on 5.15.04 / redsn0w 09.15 AND 09.6
I also have the iPad IPSW 3.2.2.
I am letting RS choose the IPSW for me (also have tried doing it manually) both cases dont work. Ultrasn0w doesn't work either.

Reply:

Use older Redsn0w (14b2) to 1. Install iPad bb, 6.15.xx; 2. Downgrade to 5.13.xx; then 3. Install Ultrasn0w via Cydia. Tutorial on iClarified. Download correct IPSW from theiphonewiki. Cheers

Reply from OP:

Thanks a mil :) worked!

if you are using windows PC then I would recommend that you first of all put your iDevice in DFU state using iREB software before jailbreaking....

uuuweeee!!!
Managed to install the 6.15 baseband using redsn0w 0.9.6rc16
Now using the the redsn0w 0.9.14b2 i'm waiting for the downgrade.

I'll come back with update. Going for a smoke ;))

**UPDATE**

Finally after 3 days it worked. I'm on 5.13 baseband.

Now i'll just have to unlock with ultrasn0w. Should i install whited00r first and after that unlock with ultrasn0w?

I am not sure I understand.  :o

What baseband do you have NOW on the iPhone? If Baseband 05.15.04 then go to post 1 in this thread.

f0recast is a great simple free standalone tool to instantly find essential iPhone info including bootloader version and baseband. Works on Mac & Windows!

I just connected my iPhone 3G to my PC with iTunes closed, started the standalone (means no install required) f0recast and it gave me all the essential infos about the iPhone:

Welcome to the forums :)

Glad you found the tutorial in the first place ;)  From the official whited00r tutorial, it seems you should just install stock 3.1.3 and then whited00r :)

Tutorial - Downgrade iPhone 3G Baseband (http://www.whited00r.com/tutorial-downgrade3g)

The blank baseband happens sometimes it seems, and isn't a bad thing (you can never actually break the device, so don't worry there), it just means you can restore to the firmware you want the baseband from :)

but the problem start when i tried to downgrade Baseband 06.15.00 to 05.13.04 :(
so..after i follow the instruction to downgrade using Redsn0w 0.9.14b2..the firmware,IMEI,& also the bootloader gone AWOL  :o
the firmware should be change to 05.13.04..but it won't happen  :-[
can you help me please?
appreciate for your kindness mate..thx so much

I know :)  That is why I linked to the other tutorial ;)

A quote from it about the blank baseband:
Quote
Open Redsn0w and select “Extras” then “Select IPSW”. Select the Stock iOS 4.2.1 firmware you downloaded in the step previous step. Do a controlled shutdown of your iPhone (“slide to power off”): this step is very important to avoid mount problems. On Redsn0w click “Back” and you will see the initial window. This time click on “Jailbreak”.

Enable “install Cydia” and “Downgrade from iPad Baseband” checkboxes. Click “next” and “next” to proceed through the normal DFU steps

The flashing process will begin: don't touch the device and don't disconnect the USB cable. It may take up to 10 minutes.

After this process check the “Modem Firmware” in Settings –> General –> About. You should see that your baseband information are missing (seems that your baseband is broken, but it isn't: we just need to load the basaband that your prefer: in this tutorial we will install 05.12.01 using iPhoneOS 3.1.3 stock firmware.

So after trying to downgrade the baseband from 06.15.00 the blank baseband is normal :)  So you can just restore to stock 3.1.3 right now with the blank baseband, and then whited00r and you will be good :)

Well it is not "normal" because I followed the tutorial in post #1 (http://www.whited00r.com/forum/index.php/topic,7134.0.html) of this thread and I was successful without having to use iOS 3.1.3 stock to get baseband 05.12.01 and this step was correct on my iPhone 3G:

"3f. iPhone reboots and here you go! Now you should have the 5.13.04 baseband at Settings > General > About".

But I removed the SIM before doing anything and rebooted twice after downgrading the baseband to make sure it sticks (just like after installing Whited00r BTW) so maybe that is why I did not get the blank baseband thingy and the extra steps of using 3.1.3 stock.  :o

BTW this thread was read 17,300 times so far and nobody else reported a blank baseband.

Anyway I updated post #1 with additional info & link.

Man I hate Apple for making us jump through so many hoops to be able to do what WE WANT and OUR devices which they don't care about as they don't even support them anymore.  >:(

First I would like to thank and apologize to PierreP for using PM. Honestly there was no reply buttom on the top of the forum and there is now.

My initial problem was the following:

I had installed whited00r 6 unlocked on my unlocked iphone 3g and got the no network problem. My phone is second hand and accepted any SIM but I do not know if it was factory unlocked or someone else unlocked it. Before whited00r 6 I had jailbroken it using redsn0w
I have attempted your solution A from http://www.whited00r.com/forum/index?topic=7243.0 and no scucces. I had some doubts using solution B as I do not know if previous owners have downgraded and therefore the red lines in the forum scared me to tried...but thinking that anyway i had an unusable phone as it standed I deceided to restore in i-Tunes the official firware.

I am happy to say it worked and my phone is backe as it was before i attempted any Jailbreak. It continues to be unlocked as I have tried two different SIM cards from differnte companies and both work.
Now i want to get on with the faboulos staff of whited00r and my guess is now that i have to choose the normal whited00r 6 file am I right? also is there any need to jailbreak it using redsn0w? my guess again is that there is not such need since your whited00r will install Cydia anyway.

Thanks for all the great help and again apologies, I am new to all the forum stuff also new to iphones and obviously to jailbreaking!!!

Welcome to the forums :)

I'm guessing your baseband was 05.15.05 then?  ;)

Did you actually get the baseband downgraded?  (I know for some people they have had issues with redsn0w freezing and such).

The red text in solution B is nothing to worry about, it is just a pointer ;)  It doesn't matter if you do accidentally restore to the official firmware, you would simply just need to follow the steps over again.

If you install whited00r you do not need to jailbreak, as you are correct, it does include Cydia :)

My baseband was 05.15.04 before restoring the original fireware and it continues to be the same.
I have now finished dowloading the whited00r 6 normal and I am ready to install. I hope it is the right stuff and will work and i undestand i do not need to upgrade/dowgrade by baseband.

Hope it works

Interesting Topic, thanks for posting this.
I have to try this. but before i start i have a couple questions to get this straight if i may:

1st Is restoring to iOS 3.1.3 necessary? I mean, if the custom 4.2.1 could work itself then why downgrade it?
2nd If we upgrade to 5.x.x to obtain Baseband 6.15.xx could work same as using the added custom iOS then the whole restoring parade could cut shorter and having iOS 5.x.x with 5.13.x BB could be a nice thing right? I know it's usually not supported for 3G to have 5.x.x but if you install ultrasnow beforehand it allows you to do that.
I just wanna know my lousy theories could be true or there's a reason to the way you guys solved it. if Baseband is low enough UltraSn0w could unlock the iPhone. and the last question, how to use IREB

thanks in advance.

Welcome to the Whited00r forum!  8)

"...If we upgrade to 5.x.x to obtain Baseband 6.15.xx" and "...iOS 5.x.x" sorry but I don't understand.  :o

Could you edit your post please and be more precise?

iPhone 3G cannot run anything above iOS 4.2.1 because of it's hardware limitations but you did not mention any iPhone model number so I don't know for sure if you are talking about that model or not.  :o

If you are talking about the tutorial in post #1 (http://www.whited00r.com/forum/index.php/topic,7134.0.html) then which step # are you referring to exactly?

About iREB, what part of the iREB image in that post do you need more explanations about?

Close iTunes > connect your device > start iREB and click on the right button depending on your device model. Once in DFU Mode, start iTunes and do your thing.

Um, I'm talking about iPhone 3G and it's downgrade indeed, and yes you're right normally you can not upgrade 3G above 4.2.1 but via few tricks you might be able to do so (there are tutorials about it and all). what i meant was: if instead of making a custom iOS, we used an actual iOS to improve our baseband to 6.15 then we don't have to do few more steps including restoring 3.1.3 and unlocked iOS after, although i'm not sure if the Baseband RedSn0w is giving after the downgrade is quite unlockable itself (that's my main question). thanks for answering in short notice.

Yes, you can skip step #1 and follow the rest of the tutorial.

You cannot skip anything else otherwise you will fail.

I followed to the letter steps #2, 3 & 4 for carrier unlocking three different iPhone 3G's with a 100% success rate.  :)

You cannot upgrade the iPhone 3G above 4.2.1 period, there are no tricks that make it work with a higher firmware, not even 4.3.3.  The custom 4.2.1 firmware is purely for upgrading the baseband to 06.15.00, which then can be downgraded using Redsn0w to go to 05.13.04 :)

I would be interested for links to the tutorials for upgrading the 3G to higher than 4.2.1 though ;)

You can restore to stock 4.2.1 and then use the "Upgrade to iPad baseband" option in redsn0w (unless you are on 3.1.3 and have the baseband 06.15.00).  Then after it upgrades, you use the "Downgrade from iPad baseband" option in redsn0w again to get to 05.13.04, which is unlockable via ultrasn0w.  That is the shortest route to downgrade the baseband sadly :(

you're probably right, I haven't tried those tutorials or anything, i just came across a few idk maybe you're right. so how you explained, means to make our phone unlockable, restoring to 3.1.3 is inevitable.

ok another question,
I updated to 6.15 BB using the custom iOS presented in http://www.whited00r.com/tutorial-downgrade3g
now while i'm trying to downgrade to 5.12, while i'm putting my phone on DFU mode it just goes black for a while, although Redsn0w says done and setup continues on phone now. nothing happens for a while and iPhone goes off after few mins, and when i'm turning it back on, it's like nothing happened.
I must add that I'm using the 4.2.1 i downloaded a while ago for this downgrading progress, it's the one that upgraded my baseband to 5.15.04, could that be the reason it's not working?

That has happened to a few people, although normally it freezes the device.  So the baseband is still 06.15.00 in the settings after you try to downgrade?  Can you try a different USB port or cable?  (sounds silly, but sometimes this is the cause.). If you can't, no worries there, will try other ideas :)

Yeah that's what happening, Freezes a little then turns off. screen is black all the time (not off). and when it comes back it's still bb 6.15, i tried a different process, like enabling Battery Percentage. didn't work either, i guess the DFU mode has a problem?, i tried with different cables, different ports. i'll keep trying though.

I know that, but for people who it freezes for, it never turns off by itself (they have left it for over an hour but no change).

Try a different redsn0w version, the other one linked in the first post of this thread.  Also, make sure you are running as administrator if you are using anything higher than windows XP (what version are you using?).

It isn't a DFU mode problem, it is a downgrading from the baseband problem :/

Try restoring to the custom firmware with the 06.15.00 baseband (because you can't restore to stock 4.2.1 because of the baseband), and try again. It could have just been a one off thing.

well it didn't work for different processes like enabling Cydia or Battery Percentage either. so i'd say it's not just the Downgrade. and yeah :/

Ok i found the problem, no solution though. it works fine with lower version of Redsn0w. i gotta dig into this, or i won't be able to sleep tonight :D

Can't say they didn't work though they didn't "work" Per se. but before i find this tutorial and all, i thought i could use latest version of redsn0w  to downgrade straight from Baseband 5.15 to 5.13, i tried it with redsn0w 9.15b3 data downloaded well into the iPhone but it didn't work indeed. right now 9.6b4 worked so far.

The first version to have the downgrade option was 0.9.14b1.

...I updated to 6.15 BB using the custom iOS presented in http://www.whited00r.com/tutorial-downgrade3g
now while i'm trying to downgrade to 5.12...

...I'm using the 4.2.1 i downloaded a while ago for this downgrading progress...

Wrong, you cannot downgrade from iPad Modem Firmware 06.15.00 to BB 5.12 using iOS 4.2.1 and redsn0w 0.9.14b2.

i tried with redsn0w_win_0.9.14b2 and redsn0w_win_0.9.15b3...

Wrong again, the post #1 is clear about using redsn0w exact version 0.9.6rc16 to upgrade from 05.15.04 to iPad's baseband 06.15.00 and then about using redsn0w exact version 0.9.14b2 and to right-click it and Run as administrator to downgrade the baseband 06.15.00 to the proper and unlockable iPhone baseband 05.13.04.

Redsn0w version 0.9.15b3 for Windows DOES NOT WORK for upgrading or downgrading the baseband on iPhone 3G.

...it didn't work for different processes like enabling Cydia or Battery Percentage either...

Wrong again as step 3d is very clear about that "...select ONLY Downgrade from iPad baseband".

...i thought i could use latest version of redsn0w to downgrade straight from Baseband 5.15 to 5.13, i tried it with redsn0w 9.15b3 data downloaded well into the iPhone but it didn't work indeed. right now 9.6b4 worked so far.

"...straight from Baseband 5.15 to 5.13" wrong again, in fact that entire quote is totally wrong.

So no wonder you are having problems because you do not follow to the letter the tutorial in post #1. I edited that post multiple times after testing it throughout on several iPhones 3G and it works but you will fail if you deviate from it and try to be creative or are sloppy and skip of modify any of the steps.

As I posted above, following steps 2, 3 & 4 worked 100% of the time for me on Windows 7 an several iPhone's 3G running iOS 4.2.1 on Modem Firmware 05.15.04.

Step 1: creating a custom iOS 4.2.1 with Sn0wbreeze (or using Whited00r's custom iOS bb 06.15.00 linked in http://www.whited00r.com/tutorial-downgrade3g ) just to upgrade Modem Firmware (a.k.a. baseband or bb) 05.15.04 to iPad's baseband 06.15.00 failed multiple times. I prefer using the 2 versions of redsn0w as described in post #1 to successfully Upgrade/Downgrade the baseband and then finally install the fast & fluid Whited00r 6 Unlocked version.  ;)

PierreP, I think you are getting the wrong end of the stick slightly ;)

True, for the first bit about downgrading straight to 05.12.02.  Should have caught that :/

For the different versions of redsn0w, that is him trying to get it working using any version of redsn0w, because 0.9.14b2 didn't work for him. He also cannot run as administrator because he is on Windows XP which does not have that option:
and i'm using win XP

Quote
Quote
...it didn't work for different processes like enabling Cydia or Battery Percentage either...

Wrong again as step 3d is very clear about that "...select ONLY Downgrade from iPad baseband".
He tried that after it failed, just to see if anything would work I'm thinking.  (Because it didn't work, so it got me thinking that something was wrong with redsn0w or his computer if none of the other options of redsn0w worked either).

For this bit as well:

...i thought i could use latest version of redsn0w to downgrade straight from Baseband 5.15 to 5.13, i tried it with redsn0w 9.15b3 data downloaded well into the iPhone but it didn't work indeed. right now 9.6b4 worked so far.

"...straight from Baseband 5.15 to 5.13" wrong again, in fact that entire quote is totally wrong.

The full quote is this: (well, relevant to this bit)

but before i find this tutorial and all, i thought i could use latest version of redsn0w  to downgrade straight from Baseband 5.15 to 5.13, i tried it with redsn0w 9.15b3 data downloaded well into the iPhone but it didn't work indeed. right now 9.6b4 worked so far.
So he had not found this tutorial yet when he tried to downgrade (which means he did search, so good on him for that! :) ).

He is trying to do everything right now, but is having issues with redsn0w and/or his computer :(

what Bcooper said.
I'm trying with a Win 7 Laptop now, but been waiting so long on fetching Baseband data. if anything happens i'll let you know.
Make sure you do run as administrator on that one ;)  Also make sure you have a good internet connection too :)  Use version 0.9.14b2 ;)

Brian, I suggest you stop wasting your time until alexino11 starts from a fresh untouched and unmodified in any way install of stock iOS 4.2.1 using iTunes and then follows the tutorial exactly to the letter.  ::)

Only then can we help and troubleshoot properly if he indicates the step number he is having problems with.

Doing that may help other users following the tutorial in post #1.

I am very tempted to delete all of alexino11's posts in this thread and also your replies to him as it only serves to confuse other users IMO because the topic of this thread is clear in post #1 and it is not anything goes Upgrade/Downgrade method xyz.  >:(

That's what I'm trying to help him do ;) He can't install stock 4.2.1, because his baseband is 06.15.00 on 3.1.3. He needs to downgrade his baseband to be able to restore to stock 4.2.1.  I got him to 4.2.1 using the Whited00r 4.2.1 special firmware with the custom iPad 06.15.00 baseband (http://www.whited00r.com/tutorial-downgrade3g), so that iTunes didn't give an error because the baseband was higher than what he was restoring to :)  (it will still give that error if he tries to restore to stock now without having the baseband downgraded).

1- So if he follows the tutorial and checks his Modem Firmware in > Settings > General > About and is now on baseband 06.15 then he could follow to the letter step 3 & 4 and it should work fine if his USB cable & computer's & iPhone ports are working properly.

2- If the > Settings > General > About > Modem Firmware info is blank then he must follow the Restore to iPhone OS 3.1.3 chapter in the Whited00r tutorial - Downgrade iPad Baseband on iPhone 3G to Unlock (http://www.whited00r.com/tutorial-downgrade3g).

well the second computer mission was a failure, it didn't pass the downloading baseband information step...

1- Check your internet speed with http://speedtest.net

2- Try later, the baseband server could be under maintenance.

3- Use an other iPhone data cable known to work properly.

4- Clean the iPhone's port using a vacuum cleaner, a toothpick or a needle but in that case the iPhone MUST be turned off to prevent any short-circuiting of the contacts, make sure there is no pocket lint in there preventing proper seating of the Data cable, use a magnifying glass & good lighting or flashlight to see inside it.

Horror  :o on my iPhone 3G when I did that because I was getting all kinds of iTunes errors: the contacts were corroded so I had to replace it (cheap & easy):

5- Disconnect iPhone and reboot computer to reset it's USB ports.

Well my net is not quite good today, but about the cable, it's a fine cable, i restored the custom software with it today, worked fine. might be my net idk. I'll go outside and use a friend's PC with a stable net to see how it works. Thanks again.

OK i used a different pc with Win 7 and it worked, my Modem Firmware is 5.13.04 now

OK, Installed Whited00r 6.0 as well, it's working well. just, it doesn't have Cydia and stuff, do i need stock 3.1.3 to jailbreak it?

Glad to hear it, although I don't' know why it broke on the two computers :(

So you finally have it working and stuff how it should be? :)

Whited00r does have cydia, it is just hidden.  Open up the App Market (which has the App Store icon) and swipe left/right until you find it, then tap on it to open it :)

Oh tricky hehe thanks, for everything :)
um, i could say my net is weird and does not open a few ports that it should? that's the only explanation hehe.
could it have anything to do with my game server? opened a few ports on my modem.
I doubt it has to do with that, except maybe on the windows 7 laptop where it never downloaded the baseband data.   Anyway, now you kind of know what the problem was, and you have whited00r working :)

Oh i had a Crisis in middle of the process which might come handy in future. i tried to restore Whited00r but in middle of it itunes gave an error and blahed, so iPhone was stuck in Recovery mode and nothing could be done, setting it in DFU mode couldn't help, iTunes couldn't find it, nor could restore it when it was in restore mode, so i used Redsn0w 9.14 and went into DFU PWN mode and then iTunes could recognize it, btw iRec couldn't do the job, so i think using RedSn0W instead of iRec is a better idea, iRec sent iphone into WTF mode which couldn't be a help either.
Btw how am i supposed to install new apps on a Whited00r, had problem using App store. and iTunes apps are all +iOS 4 any suggestions?

Srry my english I'm new in the Forum and i was freak out for my poor iphone.. I'll try to explain better the issue with my iphone ...

I try to upgrade the baseband of my iphone 3g from 05.15.4 to the ipad's one with the tutorial that solve hallogram's topic (the first page).
They mencioned that it was possible to update the baseband with two different programs Redsnow and SnOwbreze.. I use Resn0w following each step, it gave me an error in the reebot it freeze in the apple logo I couldn't check if it updated the baseband or not, here went wrong the thing.. I put the phone in DFU mode and tried to restore with a 4.2.1 CFM with ipad baseband on itunes and in the process again the iphone bricked and didn't restore and then I repeated the restore but this time with a normal firmware and again bircked at same point and now I try to restore and gives me error 1600 and if not Error 2003 I searched for the solutions and my question is...
My iphone is dead?
any suggestion of how can ? fix it

Try to put it in pwned DFU mode with iReb.

Download iReb from here (http://qwertyoruiop.com/static/mirror/iREB-r7.zip) and follow the instructions in the program. it's like normal DFU mode. Start the program, select your iPhone and then you need to press the sleep button for 2 seconds, then press the home button while not letting go of the sleep button for 9 seconds, then let go of the sleep button and hold just the home button for 5 seconds.  Then, just open iTunes and click restore ( don't try to restore from a custom file. Use apple's official ipsw )

It also is nearly impossible to solve the redsn0w step unless you can make a note of the error if it happens again. So if you do get the error again, please make a note of it so we can give the correct solution :)

Welcome to the forums :)

You are on baseband 05.13.04, not 05.15.05, so you should have service if you either have ultrasn0w, or restore to whited00r 6 unlocked.   Is your device factory unlocked, or not?

Did you not have service before you started all this on 4.2.1?

I'm not sure all about it. because when I got this phone it was unlocked on 3.1.3 iOS and also screen, half lcd, back cover are broken and battery is kind of dead. but, device turned on and I could see the screen.

then i replaced those parts and flashed device accroding to the instructions.  I have installed cydia and ultrasnow.

any solution?

Thanks

You should have service then, if you are on 05.13.04 (which the image you attached seems to say) with ultrasn0w installed.

I'm guessing it is a hardware problem, but it could be the SIM you put in, can you try a SIM from someone else?

Also, you are good to install whited00r 6 unlocked as well if you want :)  (it won't mess with the service stuff sadly, as it seems like a hardware issue).

Seeing you had that issue on 4.2.1 as well, I am going to have to say it is a hardware problem sadly :(   Unless you can test it with another SIM, just to be sure.

but, I do have unactivated SIM card from Simple Mobile (USA). Its Signal UP in my other phone. but on iPhone I can see the career menu on settings.

somebody told me this is issue of baseband IC or Antenna Problem but I didn't saw the antenna inside device on iPhone 3G.

Do you have any IDEA how to fix the hardware issue?

Baseband issue would be if the device was not factory unlocked and was on the 05.15.04 or higher baseband (which it isn't).  The device is unlocked using ultrasn0w/bootneuter, and is on the correct baseband for that to work, so I really am thinking it is a hardware issue (unless someone else has experienced this before as well and has more insight).

For fixing hardware issues, I have no clue sadly :(  I am only software support :(  Although I think the cellular chip is located on the motherboard (that's where the wifi chip is at least).  The cables run down along all of the device tough, they should be white (may not be hardware but I have seen the insides of a few iPhones/iPod touches), they should go from the top to the bottom on the sides, and come up near the bottom about an inch above the charging port.

Actually, this article probably will help a bit more ;)

Hello guys,

I tried to read everything I can. My problem is as the topic says.
I'm using a 3G Phone, BB: 05.15.04 and I want to upgrade to 06.xx.

The last two days I had nice nightshift facing all kinds of problems (The iPhone was orgininally Jailbreaked, I (stupid!!) updated it with iTunes...etc)

Now I have a working FW and the only problem is, to get the right BB.

I have tried every version of Redsn0w to upgrade the BB and everytime there was an error (USB connection error; BB error)

THen I tried to create my own Firmware with sn0wbreeze and recieved an error (downloading baseband error 'system.outofmemoryexception')

I tried it with different cables, different PC (win 7 and win XP).

Now I out of solutions....
Please help guys.

CHeers, Oli

Welcome to the forums :)

The versions of redsn0w that work are listed in the first post of this topic, anything else is much much less likely to work (like almost 0% chance of working properly).

For the USB connection error, try unplugging the iPhone from the computer, turning the computer off, and then plugging the iPhone back in after the computer has booted up.  Also make sure no other programs that connect to the device are open, such as an iPhone file browser or iTunes (redsn0w should close iTunes automatically anyway).

Hopefully that simple of a solution will work :)  (I have had it work once for me, no clue what causes it though).

NICE!
It works... after 3 days...

The solution for me was to really REALLY clean the contacts of the phone. So for all other folks who are (like me 1 hour ago) really on the edge to throw the phone against the wall, make really sure that the complete connection from iphone to PC good is. The error messages wont tell you that. I recieved the craziest errors...

But now it works!

Thanks guys from whited00r your forum has one of the most competend replys solutions.

Unable to use redsnow 0.9.14b2 to downgrade since newer versions of redsn0w don't seem to work on my iphone. Managed to get to step 3 using 0.9.10b8. Anything above that version will not work, screen remains black instead of pineapple.
Any tips?

Never mind, apparently with the newer versions of redsnow i have to keep holding the home button way longer than in the older version.

Welcome to the forums :)

That means you are one of the rare cases where you had a blank baseband.  (This rarely happens so we left it out of the page).

You shouldn't actually have needed to restore to 3.1.3, but seeing you did, that is why you have the 05.12.01 baseband (which is fine BTW).

Thanks for the warning though!

i am at step 1, i was on 5.15.04, 5.9 bootloader, however when applying the modified snowbreze ipsw, it starts installation, however after some time it went to the restore mode with ireb logo and usb on the screen, error 1015 > when i use ireb to jump over, it just jumps back on the usb and snowbreeze logo and stays there - what i did to go over this > opened redsn0w_win_0.9.14b2, selected 4.2.1 ipsw original, jailbreak > only downgrade ipad baseband, after that... :

update: i am now on 5.13.04 4.2.1 fw, BUT without signal from sim (dunno why) wifi etc is up, tried to catch some satellites from balcony and i think there is a progress coordinates were hoping, now flashing 3.1.2 original if all will go smooth will continue on whitedoor

update2: 3.1.2 stock is up ( classical ireb 1015 issue) now also gsm signal is up! applying whitedoor now...

update 3: whitedoor done! now its time to check gps

EDIT: I think that problem was because i had 06.15.00 iPad Baseband. Now i downgraded it, but now i am stocked in loading screen. When i turn on iPhone, it doesn't respond, just showing apple's logo in middle. Computer can't find iPhone connected... :(

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I used this tutorial to jailbreak my iPhone 3G, but after some reinstalls i got 1015 error. I have tried much tutorials how to kick out of this recovery mode, but it doesn't works for me. I think its something wrong with that i installed ssh? How to fix that?

Yes, i tried with that, too, many times, but problem was the same. I solved problem just when i installed original firmware with redsn0w. I think the problem was after that iPad baseband hacking and s***. So, i have now checked all features on jailbreaking thing, and made some conclusions about that - i will try to jailbreak and unlock ios 4.2.1 version with ultrasn0w's help. Why not whited00r? Because i just want newest software and cydia on it unlocked for SIM card. :)

I will try now downgrade baseband from 05.15.04 to 05.13.04 with your tutorial... Please, wish luck for me, thank you. :)

"... i have treid redsnow the latest version" - Which version? Not all redsn0w versions work to downgrade the modem firmware (or baseband) iPad 06.15.00 to an unlockable iPhone 3G baseband 05.13.04 or 5.12.

If at the present you are stuck at that 06.15.00 baseband, follow exactly the step #3 on the post #1 (http://www.whited00r.com/forum/index.php/topic,7134.0.html) of this thread which says to use exactly the redsn0w 0.9.14b2 (Windows) linked in that post.

Also in step 3e: !!! DO NOT DISCONNECT THE PHONE DURING PROCESS !!! It could take up to 10 minutes to complete.

Was it the state of the iPhone currently exactly? Does it turn on? What does the screen show? Is it in Recovery Mode?

Do this: Hard Reset often solve many problems: hold both Home & Power buttons until the Apple logo appears and let go of the buttons & smell the roses while it is doing it's thing.

No worries, hard reset will not change any of your info, tweaks & apps on the device.

"carrier not available when i try the 3 sim the wifes uses i should add the iphone is locked to 02..." - That is normal if it is not jailbroken & also carrier unlocked using Cydia > Ultrasn0w.

"do i continue to downgrade the modem using redsn0w_win_0.9.14b2... then install whited00r 6 ?... - Yes, just follow steps 3 & 4 of the tutorial in post #1 as I did it several times when testing it thoroughly before updating several times that post and make sure you are using Whited00r Unlock version as it includes Ultrasn0w.

Welcome to the forums :)

What operating system are you trying this on?  Windows or Mac?  (So that I can provide relevant troubleshooting tools if it comes to that ;) ).

It is best to use the one from here first.  Between failed downgrade attempts, you will need to reboot the device to avoid issues with the next attempts (basically, hold the home/power buttons down until it shows the apple logo, and then hold them again until it turns off).

It will work, but you won't have working GPS on the 06.15.00 baseband.  If that doesn't matter to you or him, then don't worry about it :)

My apologies if this question is answered somewhere. I have followed all instructions and have successfully updated the baseband to 6.15 and downgraded to 5.13.04 but I cannot restore the phone using itunes and install unlocked firmware. I used iReb but I still get an error 1600. What should I do next, I tried just to open Cydia and install ultrasnow, but I do not have it in repo666.

Please help me out someone?

Thank you in advance.

Welcome to the forums :)
If your baseband is right, and at 05.13.04 on iOS 4, you can just use iReb v6 (https://sites.google.com/site/toolsforwhited00r/home/tools-for-whited00r/iREBWindows.zip?attredirects=0&d=1) to enter PWNED DFU mode and restore to whited00r 6 unlocked.

That is what I was trying to do. I downgraded to 5.13.04, entered DFU using iReb, started iTunes and tried to restore to whited00r 6 unlocked  and iTunes gave me an error code 1600. So I tried to use Cydia to unlock using ultrasnow and was not able to find it in repo666. That is what I tried. Then I restarted the phone several times and kept trying Cydia and succeeded. After another restart Cydia downloaded/updated something and I unlocked the phone using ultrasnow. I guess there was an issue with internet connection, that it why there was no ultrasnow in repo666.
Now the phone is working fine! Huge thanks to all!!! And thank you for responding to my post. Good luck everyone!

Whited00r is much faster than 4.2.1, as well as has more features :)

However, it is not iOS 6 :(

This is reaaally killing me. Oh, well..

I have in my hands an iPhone 3G on 4.2.1 from a friend that is going out of the country and, therefore, asked me to unlock it. I found this tutorial, but it keeps giving me and 160X error all the time.

I've now tried in three (yes, THREE) different computers and still getting the same error (sometimes 1600, others 1604, and this last one was 1601). I've also tried three different USB cables. Two computers on XP and one on 7.

Any idea of what I can do? I'm getting crazy. Btw, iPhone in Pwned DFU using iReb.

Thank you in advance! Cheers

What version of iReb are you using? v7 doesn't work, but anything lower does. Try it with iReb v6 (https://sites.google.com/site/toolsforwhited00r/home/tools-for-whited00r/iREBWindows.zip?attredirects=0&d=1) to see if that helps.
You could also try Redsn0w 0.9.14b2 (http://www.whited00r.com/tools/redsn0w_win_0.9.14b2.zip) under "Extras" there is an option for "PWNED DFU".

Hopefully redsn0w does the trick, if not, check the data port of the iPhone for lint or broken/corroded connectors, which can cause 16xx errors without apparent reason.

Also, which part of the tutorial are you getting 16xx errors on?  It could be your current baseband is causing issues, if you are restoring to stock 4.x and have the 06.15.00 baseband.

I didn't got nowhere yet.. I'm getting the errors while trying to restore with the CFW for the iPad Baseband. Doesn't seem to be due to the connector, since it is in good shape and the connection works perfectly for everything else.

Just tried Pwned DFU with redsn0w, same result. Jeez... ???

Just because it works fine for everything else doesn't mean it would work fine for restoring to firmwares ;)
It uses different connections for different functions on the device, like syncing and so on.

Do any of the tools give errors when trying to enter PWNED DFU mode?

Any thoughts?

Maybe it is the firmware you downloaded that you are trying to restore to?  It should be working, with iReb v6 or Redsn0w 0.9.14b2 :o
It could be corrupted, you could try downloading it again.

Even if I used it before to restore the iPhone..? ::)

I downloaded it from felixbruns, but sure, I can try using another one. Any better link you're aware?

You haven't restored to the 4.2.1 firmware with the 06.15.00 baseband have you?  Try the firmware from this tutorial:
Tutorial - Downgrade iPhone 3G baseband (http://www.whited00r.com/tutorial-downgrade3g)

If you got the original (non-modified) firmware from felixbruns, and haven't messed with it and are trying to restore to it, that is the stock firmware and shouldn't give you a 16xx error (which in that case, you do get a 16xx error when trying to restore to a non-custom firmware).

I did use the firmware file for a full and normal restore, first. After that, I used it to create the CFW (iPad Baseband), without any success - that's when I get the error.

I'll try with the one from that website.

So you made a custom iPad baseband firmware?  It should have ended up on the desktop, it doesn't modify the original .ipsw.

The one from that tutorial I linked you to should have worked though, as that is what everyone uses, in conjunction with either iReb (older versions) or Redsn0w (the version I linked you to) to enter PWNED DFU mode first.

You can try iReb v5 (http://www.mediafire.com/?m4gbqog8nid8bdg) and hope that works...   If not, you may need to restore to 3.1.3, jailbreak it with Redsn0w, and then enter PWNED DFU on 3.1.3 and restore to the custom firmware with the iPad baseband.

I've made one, yes, which was giving me the error. Then I tried using the one from the link you gave me, same error.

How do I downgrade it to 3.1.1? Need to have SHSH saved, right? I'll also try with iReb V5.

Using the PWNED DFU tools, and having tried different cables/computers, it really should be working. :(  That's what makes me think the point of fault is the iPhone itself (as you are doing exactly what works for everyone else).

No, you don't need SHSH to downgrade to 3.1.3.

Ok, already downgraded to 3.1.3 - now which version of redsn0w should I use to jailbreak it? Does it make a difference?

Ok, already jailbroken and restoring with 4.2.1 @ iPad Baseband. Last try, I guess.. Let's see what we get :)

Did you enter PWNED DFU mode still when on 3.1.3?  Also, something new that has come up recently that I'm trying to remember in troubleshooting, what version of iTunes are you using? The latest version breaks restoring to custom firmwares.  You need 11.0 or lower.

Seriously? Now?! ;D

I was using 11.1.1.11 in all of the three computers; two of them were already up to date and the other one has just been installed. Later today I'll try using my sister's laptop, I'm pretty sure she has a lower version. Hope it works now, which will make me feel good and yet.. Stupid :)

I'll come back with news at night. Thanks!

Sorry about that!   :-[  It's a relatively new issue that is coming up and I need to remember to remember it ;)  Glad everything is going along nicely though! :)  I'm sure whenever we get around to updating FAQs/Tutorials that the iTunes issue will be addressed and tell people to downgrade first :)

Hello I have the same issue as Coquenão...

I had windows 8.1 and I rolled back to windows 7 thinking that was the problem, now in W7 I have installed latest version of itunes but reading your advice I downloaded the version to 11.. and now to 10.7 and I still receive error 1600 even I'm on DFU PWND with redsnow..

Redsn0w says now you can install any custom ipsw with itunes but I still have the same 1600 error and after 6 hours trying to unlock my 3G i want to cry! jajaja

Hope you can help me

Just to be sure I understood.. You previously had version 11 of iTunes and then installed a lower version, is that correct? You should try on a computer that has never been updated to iTunes 11, I think. Or you can just format yours and install any version below.

iTunes 11.05 or lower is needed, or you have to use Redsn0w - both of which can be found in this thread :)

You have to point it to the stock firmware for your device, not whited00r ;) Keep this on the other thread you made though please :)

Welcome to the forums :)

When you have the blank baseband, you need to restore to stock 3.1.3, as that will write in a compatible baseband :) (compatible with the whited00r unlocker).

After that, follow the rest of the tutorial for entering PWNED DFU mode with redsn0w 0.9.14b2 and then restore to the whited00r .ipsw.
