Title: OS X 86 aka Hackintosh
Post by: Alavi on February 13, 2011, 11:54:43 PM
Anyone tried this? I have used osx86 for over a year on my pc, and that lead me to buy my first macbook.

Well, since apple turned macs into using intel procs, osx could be modified and installed on regular pc machines.

the osx86 project are the guys that made it all possible (sumthin' like saurik).
you download one of the distros from the net (you can find em all on osx86 wiki) and do an install, like you would install a linux or windows. you can even dual boot. Only problem, are the drivers, so you gotta grab a hang of things before you can choose the good ones, but if you know your specs, it shouldn't be hard, since there is a list of available drivers on the install screen.

I have had some trouble with nvidia 7300, so i found aditional drivers on the net for example.
there is a pretty big community of people using this, so it shouldn't be hard finding any advice on the net. you can even ask me if you don't understand something.

keep in mind that no osx86 pc will ever work as good as a native imac, but hay, at least yu got yourself a good working and reliable osx  system.
this is really good for you ios coders out there ;)

My dell 1525 is a hackintosh as well as my other old desktop. both run 100% :)

what i meant by "it can never work 100%" is that you can make the same spec pc as some mac, but it will never work as good as that native mac.

Well for my standards it works pretty awesome!

I know, i wouldn't have used it for so long if i didn't like it.
But from a Mac user point of view, you need to buy one to really love it xD

no, i cannot.
it can work on almost anything, YOU need to find out how.
Try different drivers from list, reinstall and reinstall until you get it to work. google is your friend.

Title: Re: OS X 86 aka Hackintosh

Well the hackintosh is decently difficult to get working due to the unreliable distros and more importantly, drivers!  However if you're looking for a very good Windows replacement try Ubuntu, it's very easy to setup and use, and much much faster.

My Hardware:
MoBo: DFI BloodIron P35
CPU: Q6600 @3,4ghz daily
VGA: nVidia 9800GT Overclocked

Currently I got a nVidia Fermi GTX460 but I have problems with MacOS. Low performances (even if QE is enabled) and random freeze.

The great thing about hackintosh is that you can have a great/awesome computer, and run osx on it. not paying 2k$ for it.
it's not that hard installing one, once you get a hang on it.

nop xD
well ask us, what is the problem? boot with -f -v -x and tell us where it hangs?
Title: Re: OS X 86 aka Hackintosh
Post by: princemaxx on February 23, 2011, 01:41:12 PM
Haha. It doesn't hang over there.. The installation is the buggy part. :/
It gets stuck on "4 minutes remaining".
I burnt it twice on 2 different dvds. :S
Kalyway 10.5.2 - I was using that. :P
I'll try iPC and iDeneb after my exams finish.

I think ideneb is the best ... AMD/intel patched  Leopard OS X for Hackintosh ..

There is also a Lite version ...

If You are not looking for Snow leopard ... try iDeneb ..

iatkos is said to be the best actually.
but i have never tried it. only kalyway.
kalyway worked fine for me.

an advice. try to keep mouse moving from time to time, so the computed doesn't fall to sleep or whatever. helped me a few times!
Title: Re: OS X 86 aka Hackintosh
Post by: Gawernator on February 24, 2011, 12:06:19 AM
Lol you can't disable sleep? (Suspend to disk)
Title: Re: OS X 86 aka Hackintosh
Post by: Alavi on February 24, 2011, 12:14:01 AM
well, first of all, sleep shouldn't be supported during installation. i am not sure why is that happening, im aiming at something bios related, but in my experience, it happens on w7, osx, ubuntu, suse etc. computer just freezes after a few minutes, if you do not keep it awake. ofc you can disable it in the system itself, we are talking about instalation

How do you check if your motherboard meets the specs or not? :P

I feel like a n00b. :(
Title: Re: OS X 86 aka Hackintosh
Post by: Gawernator on February 24, 2011, 11:57:47 PM
Google what the specs of your motherboard is.  If you don't know what motherboard you have, pop open the case and look at your model number.

Or simply download everest home, or speccy. Both are free.
Title: Re: OS X 86 aka Hackintosh
Post by: Gawernator on February 25, 2011, 01:19:32 AM
It's faster just to take 15 seconds and look at your motherboard :P
Title: Re: OS X 86 aka Hackintosh
Post by: Alavi on February 25, 2011, 01:24:22 AM
heh, i got too much used to mac way of doing stuff. "there's a preinstalled app for that" xD
anyways, everest is more reliable than looking. for example, my pc mobo didn't have anything written :P
Title: Re: OS X 86 aka Hackintosh
Post by: Gawernator on February 25, 2011, 01:28:40 AM
Well it might not be obvious Big Letters like my motherboard but I'm 99% sure you will be able to find a tiny serial number or model number

Late reply due to exam week...

Yup no wifi...
Anyway, I trying another wireless USB driver call "Aztech 550 USB"

But not support for Mac OS X...:X
Finding wifi driver....
Why wifi driver is the most hard thing in Hackintosh?
Title: Re: OS X 86 aka Hackintosh
Post by: Gawernator on March 09, 2011, 03:55:03 PM
Because wifi drivers are usually proprietary closed source. There is sometimes Linux support but not mac
