Then it could be simply an antenna or antenna connection being bad if it does get a WiFi signal reception but it's weak and the iPhone needs to be close to the WiFi access point. It's good news if it's not the WiFi chipset being toast.

To make sure, I would try with an other network to see if it's the same problem and also read those Apple Support pages:

iOS: Wi-Fi settings grayed out or dim

iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections

If the iPhone 3G does not find any network when close to the router in > Settings > Wi-Fi > WiFi Networks then it's not an antenna problem.

Does the iPhone 3G shows a MAC address in > Settings > General > About > WiFi Address? If it does then it should not be a WiFi chipset problem.

While an antenna replacement part is pretty cheap on eBay it requires quite a lot of steps to replace it.  :-\

Check this tutorial as it's the same antenna for the WiFi, GPS & Bluetooth: http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Installing+iPhone+3G+GPS+Antenna/582/1?singlePage

If the problem is with the chipset, check these videos.

In the video description he writes:

Here's something to try… Move to where you have Wi-Fi issues, and in the Wi-Fi settings press "Other…".

Then enter your Wi-Fi name (or SSID) and password, if you're using one (you should be).

Post your results, I am also having this issue.

You are welcomed. Yes, problematic WiFi is very common on iPhone 3G.

Before you do any hardware repair, make sure you do the steps of the two Apple support pages linked above to rule out a software problem.

The other thing to check is your Network setup itself, the encryption method & connecting an other Apple device to it is a way to do it.

finkmac, a member of the WD admin team just received an iPhone 3G with exactly the same symptoms you have for WiFi on a fresh install of iOS 4.2.1 stock made with iTunes: sees the network only when very close to the router.

On my suggestions he temporarily removed the password on the router which removes  the encryption method to test & bingo, he could see the network from the other room. Maybe he did something else, I asked him to post in this thread.

Did you try a Hard Rest?  :o

Hard Reset often solve many problems: hold both Home & Power buttons until the Apple logo appears and let go of the buttons & smell the roses while it is doing it's thing.

No worries, hard reset will not change any of your info, tweaks & apps on the device.

Just quoting a WD user from an other thread:

--- Quote from: crimary on July 25, 2013, 12:01:35 PM ---...my real problem is fixing my wifi on my iPhone 3G, which is suddenly cannot see any wifi network, tried everything

1. reset router
2. buy new router
3. reinstall IPSW, Jailbreak, use 4.2.1 Iphone Custom IPSW
4. Install Whited00r 6

but still no luck, maybe this is now a hardware issue
